Barry explores how the imagination recognises forms in amorphous shapes such as clouds, branches against the sky or ripples in water.
Influenced by John Martin's illustrations for Paradise Lost, Barry interacts with those amorphous formations as a mechanism for automatic drawing; creating shapes and landscapes that allude to the sublime or darker aspects of the subconscious.
Barry's amorphous landscapes are sometimes subverted by lowbrow inflections; appearing as cartoon figures against imposing backdrops which render more serious undercurrents present in the art work as impotent.
